All-Clad Seconds Sale 2009

allclad

It’s that time of year again, folks—the All-Clad Seconds Sale is next weekend, June 5th and 6th. Last year I made the trip to the Washington County Fairgrounds near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was amazed by the deep discounts. You can read this post and its comments for a full report, but here’s a quick recap: The prices on a wide range of All-Clad’s high-quality (cough, very expensive) pots and pans were reduced by 40% to 70%, and I wound up with two flawless and reasonably-priced pots that I now use all the time.

If you’re in Pittsburgh next weekend but can’t make it to the Washington Fairgrounds, a local kitchen store and cooking school called Crate is holding their own All-Clad Seconds sale. According to the Crate website, Wüsthof knives will be also be discounted, as well as some cutting boards, towels, and salt and pepper mills. I’ve never been to this location for the sale, so I can’t vouch for how long the lines might be or how much merchandise will be there.

Wherever you wind up in your quest for pots, it looks like Pittsburgh is the place to be next weekend. Happy shopping, and let me know how the sale goes!

The All-Clad Seconds Sale:

Washington County Fairgrounds: Friday, June 5 from 9 am to 7 pm, and Saturday, June 6 from 9 am to 4 pm. The Fairgrounds are located near Washington, Pennsylvania.

Crate: Friday, June 5 and Saturday, June 6 from 9:30 am to 5 pm; Sunday, June 7 from 11 am to 5 pm. Crate is located at 1960 Greentree Road, Greentree Road Shopping Center, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Until the New Year…

pies

I thought I’d have some time to write this week, but it’s just not going to happen. I’m heading to Italy for work and Prague and Vienna for fun, so I won’t be around for the next few weeks. I’m frazzled trying to prepare for the trip, and I’m still not fully recovered from Thanksgiving. So I’ll leave you with these three pies—one chocolate-pecan, one pumpkin, and one cherry—until I’m back and blogging. With the future jetlag and holiday craziness, I’m sad to say it might not be until the New Year. I hope you’ll wait for me until then! Oh, and any food-related tips on Prague and Vienna would be much appreciated. Happy Holidays!

A Break

Things here at Artichoke Heart will be quiet for about the next week and a half, as I’m heading out of town for another quick trip to Singapore. I need to recharge my blogging batteries anyway, so this break is coming at the right time. Have a good week!

Court Street Strolls: Fat Cat Wines Coming Soon

Fat Cat Wines Coming Soon to Carroll Gardens

As we strolled down Court Street on Saturday night, Jim and I were surprised by the activity going on at a storefront near West 9th Street. It looks like a new wine shop called Fat Cat Wines will soon open on this sleepy stretch of the block. A closer look this morning revealed sleek wooden wine racks and a counter under construction. I don’t usually post tips such as this, but any new, interesting shop on this quiet end of Court Street is always exciting to me. Hopefully the store will carry some intriguing wines. I’ll keep my eye on it and see if I can find out more information.

Happy Anniversary to the Choke

Jim mixing dough for the pasta

Today is the first anniversary of Artichoke Heart! That’s right, one year ago today I blogged about making pasta for the first time. This awkward entry was soon followed by writings related to pizzelle and bread baking, trips to Paris, Italy, Singapore, and California, and exercises in book reading, restaurant reviewing, and Jamie Oliver worshipping.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this past year as much as I have. I started this blog looking for a creative outlet and a way to express my enthusiasm for all things food-related. Artichoke Heart has given me all that and more in a year filled with ups and downs, so I am going to continue blogging, for as long as I have ideas.

In the coming months you can expect more recipe testing and pasta making, as well as whatever new food adventures come my way. I’m sure there will be more love for Jamie Oliver. And more Jim! (That’s him up there, mixing the pasta dough.) Oh, I also want to challenge myself more and add some personal profiles to the mix. I just need to summon the courage to actually speak to some of my favorite shopkeepers in the neighborhood. I hope you’ll stay tuned. Thanks for reading!
